Catholic Church in New York to Pay 1,300 Sexual Abuse Victims

The New York announcement follows a federal judge's recent approval of a $230 million settlement for the New Orleans Archdiocese and an $880 million settlement by the Los Angeles Archdiocese in late 2024.

The Archdiocese of New York has announced it will negotiate a settlement for approximately 1,300 outstanding sexual abuse claims and is establishing a $300 million fund to compensate the victims. 

Key Details of the Settlement Negotiations

• Fundraising: The $300 million fund is being raised through a combination of methods, including a 10% reduction in the archdiocese's operating budget, staff layoffs, and the sale of real estate assets, such as its former Manhattan headquarters building.
• Mediation Process: The archdiocese has agreed to enter into mediation with the survivors' attorneys to reach a "global settlement". Retired California Judge Daniel J. Buckley, who previously mediated the Los Angeles Archdiocese's record-setting settlement, will serve as the neutral mediator.
• Goal: Cardinal Timothy Dolan expressed hope that this process would resolve all meritorious claims expeditiously and provide the maximum amount of compensation possible to help victim-survivors heal and move forward.
• Victim Response: While some attorneys view this as a step in the right direction, others have criticized the $300 million amount, noting it is less than the recent $320 million settlement reached by the much smaller Diocese of Rockville Centre, calling the offer "insulting".
• Legal Context: The negotiations come after New York's Child Victims Act (CVA) temporarily lifted the statute of limitations, allowing hundreds of decades-old claims to be filed. The archdiocese is also in a legal battle with its insurer, Chubb, which has declined to cover the settlement costs on the grounds that its policies do not cover "knowingly allowing a pattern of abuse to persist".
